# Adding User Defined fields & tags

Hi
I am new to adding User Defined Fields.How can i add new user defined fields. As i can see all the fields are already used from
5000 - 9999 and (User fields in the range 8000-8999 are currently reserved for work-in-progress in Japan and China.)
If i have to define a new user defined field or tag what should be tag numbers i need to use?

hi,
In case u are coding for a Sell Side application u are free to use any tag between 5000 and 8000 ( even if already used in FIX document)and publish that tag to your
buy side applications. if u r coding a buy side better u ask your sell side to provide the tag to its buy side users.

Thanks for your quick response.
I am working at CBOE and basically we want to include these following three fields in
in AllocationInstruction Message in Allocs repeating Group (AllocGrp).
1. AllocPositionEffect --Since field is not there in FIX4.4 but though i can see this field in FIX.5.0SP1 with tag number 1047.Shall i goahead and define the same Field as UserDefinedField with any TAG number between 5000-8000.
2. TransId --This field we want to use to send the TradeId in the AllocsGrp.
3. MarketMakerAccount --Again this field is needed to send or receive MMAccount for each of the Allocation level.
After searching the User Defined fields section i found the following relevant fields which are already defined.
I am thinking to reuse the same fields rather than redefining new fields any suggestions on this??
9924 TransactID
8
Indicates the number alloted to a trade.
9538 MarketMakerID
(U4)
The market maker ID to be shown against a quote.

Hi,
The Fields u mentioned i have never used and hence can not comment.
but in general , since you are coding for the Exchange Side and hence i think u can document & publish your tags as you wish.
