Currently ‘sell’ represents ‘sell long’ but there “may” be a mandate
by the SIA to specify ‘sell long’ in the Side field.

Are there any plans to add ‘sell long’ as a separate value for Side (tag 54) in current/future FIX versions?

Can you provide a reference to the SIA documentation on this matter? The SIA can make recommendations on business practice. For something to be truly mandated it would most likely come from the SEC. FPL does work closely with the SIA, BMA and FIA to ensure that the protocol supports recommended industry practices. At this point in time this particular issue has not come up.
