In both the FIX 4.1 and FIX 4.2 spec, there is no mention of the field length imposed by the CHAR data type.

Has this been defined?

In Fix 4.2, CHAR data type is a single character, while STRING is a free-length alpha-numeric string.

In Fix 4.1, CHAR data type is a free-length alpha-numeric string.
