Hi all,
I have some doubt over clOrd and OrdId. I know that clOrdId is a unique id assigned by buy-side while the later is assigned by sell-side. But I want to know is there any relation between these two, because from the dataset we have, I found that:

1. First buy side send an order msg with a clOrdId, and then sell side replies with same clOrdId and same id is also used for ordId. Is this a rule, a convenient custom or just a coincidence?

2. Throughout a chain of orders, like order, canceling the same order, or replacing the same order, ordId remains the same, but clOrdId changes for order-cancel, replace. Gain is this a rule?

Thanks,

Hi,

The client order ID ie Tag 11 is completly different than that of the order ID Tag 37 which is given by broker.

The broker uses different order ID when he sends back the execution on the order. It will not be same as the orginal client order ID.

Girish,

Some times broker system fails or is not capable of allocating a new Order Id, by default they just copy the CI order Id details.

However, CI order id keeps on changing (infact this is a rule) while there is cancel or amendment request on a particular order while the broker order Id will be unique.

Even there is no hard and fast rule that broker Order Id should be unique.
Depending on the ability of a broker to use the same order Id through out the order the uniqueness is preserved else they too are changed on a cancel and amendment request along with CI order Id.

Harish

Hi

Can you please provide me the logs were we can see that broker is sending same value in TAG 11 and Tag 37 in the execution report.
because according to fix these order ID are unique and cannot be duplicated.

Thanks.

Deepak,

Here’s an explanation of the fields that we are discussing as per Fix 4.2:

Tag 11 = Unique identifier for Order as assigned by institution (identified by SenderCompID or OnBehalfOfCompID as appropriate). Uniqueness must be guaranteed within a single trading day. Firms, particularly those which electronically submit multi-day orders, trade globally or throughout market close periods, should ensure uniqueness across days, for example by embedding a date within the ClOrdID field.

Tag 41 = ClOrdID of the previous order (NOT the initial order of the day) as assigned by the institution, used to identify the previous order in cancel and cancel/replace requests.

Tag 37 = Unique identifier for Order as assigned by broker. Uniqueness must be guaranteed within a single trading day. Firms which accept multi-day orders should consider embedding a date within the OrderID field to assure uniqueness across days.

Ideally, the broker should assign a unique id in tag 37 as per its own oms which is much more convenient for the traders on its side to recognise the order. Hence its different from tag 11/41 which is assigned by the client system.

Now in your case, the broker’s system is copying the value in tag 11 from the new order and assigning to Tag 37 on the executions. This might work in some cases but I am not sure if its doing the same for scenarios wherein a Replace request gets accepted and tag 37 value changes based on the new value in tag 11 on the same order. If thats happening then its incorrect and needs to be fixed on the brokers side. If tag 37 remains the same throughout the life cycle of the order, then its perfectly fine. Your system should generally ignore tag 37 and check the ER’s based on tag 11/41 comibination. I hope this clarifies your question.

Regards
Sunil Singh

Hi,

I believe that it hasn’t been stated clearly that the Order id (37) should remain same through out the life of an order in the specs. Although I have experienced the norm of FIX is that tag 37 remains same through out the life cycle of an order and it should be followed as its more convenient to track the orders if this rule is followed.

I have another example in which once we are receiving a Cancel Reject Message on a Cancel Request of a multi leg order the order ID (37) changes and is equal to what is sent in tag 11.

Let me know if there are any additions any body would like to make.
