I wanted to know:

  1. What are ECNs?

  2. What role do they play in a FIX Network?

ECN stands for Electronic Connectivity Network which is the general term for the electronic market that participants connect to in order to sent messages to one another using the FIX protocol.

ECN’s were originally known as electronic crossing networks because they allow institutional investors to cross buy and sell trades without going through a broker, keeping the market impact low. Brokers can also do these crosses within their own office if they get buy and sell orders in the same stock so the ECN is an alternative to sending order flow to a broker.
