There is an RC1 Technical Proposal and a User Guide from 2016 on the topic of JSON encoding, but did this ever get adopted as part of the standard?

Not sure about the status of the FIX-JSON spec specifically, but we are using Orchestra to help de/serialise multiple encodings including a general-purpose JSON encoding. This is quite useful for analytics and post-trade processing.

[Encoding FIX using JSON](https://www.fixtrading.org/standards/json-online/) is part of the FIX Technical Standards but has remained in a Release Candidate stage due to a lack of interest from the community to move this forward to a final Version 1.0. Please see [here](https://www.fixtrading.org/packages/technical-standard-proposal-process/) for details regarding the FIX process for Technical Standards.

FIX would certainly welcome renewed interest and establish a FIX Working Group underneath the GTC Subcommittee [FIX Standards](https://www.fixtrading.org/groups/fixstandardssub/) to facilitate this. FIX can issue a call for participation if there is a small group coming forward to join such an initiative.

Happy to hear from @martinat that [Orchestra](https://www.fixtrading.org/standards/fix-orchestra-online/) is fit-for-purpose to support JSON encodings.

FIX Technical Director
