Can someone either point me in the right direction on site or explain what the differences are in the new equity protocol of 4.4/5.0 vs. 4.1. new to this. thx

I would start with the release notes of FIX 4.2, 4.3, 4.4 and 5.0. You will find that semantic changes were most significant between FIX 4.2 and FIX 4.3. Changes from FIX 4.4 and FIX 5.0 mainly affect the standard header due to the introduction of Transport Independence. The application layer has simply been extended since FIX 4.3, i.e. you will find many more messages, fields and valid values in higher versions compared to FIX 4.1 which only had about 30 messages and 200 fields. We are now approaching 150 messages and 4000 fields (2000 of these are for instrument definitions in the area of OTC derivatives).
Semantic changes introduced with FIX 4.3 are mainly around party identification and the concept of the fields OrdStatus(39) and ExecType(150).
