For freeware, go to [http://www.quickfixengine.org/download.html](http://www.quickfixengine.org/download.html). On the QuickFIX site, there is a link to Log4FIX and there is also a QuickFIX Log viewer to view inbound and outbound messages. If you want to view it right from the stream/NIC card, you can use Ethereal (there is a link on the page for that as well). Freeware are basic tools only…if you need to tail and analyze production logs of considerable size, you are better off getting a commercially available log reader.

Aegis Software offers a FIX engine, and we also offer a “Client Simulator” product that will read FIX logs to decode and replay them.

Rapid Addition ([www.rapidaddition.com](http://www.rapidaddition.com)) have a FIX engine with tools for reading in FIX messages from log files as well as SQL Server. These can also be used within your own .Net applications.

MagniFIX is another option that you could look it. It is architected to read and analyze FIX messages across all FIX engines.

With regards to solutions that can be used to view FIX messages, software solutions such as Log4FIX or MagniFIX are sufficient for development. For a production environment, I would recommend a product which uses a network based approach, such as TradePVR. The main advantage is that you can monitor, record, and analyze all FIX traffic at the packet level without adding any load to your system. You always know exactly what messages were sent over the wire, which might not correspond to what is in your log file if your FIX engine goes down. Large sessions such as market data can consist of gigabytes of messages per day. Having a system that indexes them in real-time means that searches will always be quick. Additionally, the approach allows latency tracking of all requests, so support and management can view the outliers as they happen.
