What are the impacts of FPML on FIX and FIXML ?
We have been working very closely with the FpML organization (see www.fpml.org). At this point we feel that FIX an FpML are complementarty in nature and we’ve established an effort to ensure that the two standards are maintained and enhanced in a coordinated manner. FpML is focused on standardizing the XML representation of product and trading related information specific to complex derivatives. They are not defining a transmission layer (i.e. the FIX session layer) nor message flows. The securities they are focused on do not have standard security identifiers and simply identifying and describing the security/product itself is a major effort. John Goeller who leads the FIXML effort and other members of the FIX Technical Committee are engaged in open dialog and information sharing. We are actively reviewing each other’s XML-specific work and approach.

There will be some overlap with FpML and the work being done by the ECN & Exchanges working group on complex products.

A discussion is being held on the subject of FpML and FIXML as part of the Security Industries Middleware Council April Meeting being held in New York on Tuesday, April 23rd. Brian Lynn (JP Morgan(, FpML Standard Chair and Jim Northey (FIX Technical Committee and US Steering Committee) will make this presentation.
The SIMC is a non-profit industry organization that focuses on promoting middleware adoption for the securities industry.
The all day April 23rd meeting, including lunch and refreshments is open to non-members for a fee of $250.00. The fee for SIMC members for the meeting is $50.00.
