For what purpose is FIX used?

Hi all,
I understand that FIX is a definite protocol for exchanging messages for securities trading.
Just wanted to have an overview of how exactly FIX can be used in securities trading. Is it only used by brokers for communication with each other.
Can FIX be used in net trading?

Fix can of course be used for net trading. This is the Advantage of such a protocol
