The FIX Protocol Limited (FPL) Southern Africa Conference is taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on 10 March 2006. The Southern Africa Committee hosts the second (annual) FPL conference, and the objective is for current and potential users of electronic trading technology, to collaborate, network, learn and strategise with industry colleagues. Attending the conference will explain how to use FIX throughout the lifecycle of a trade in various asset classes.
FIX (Financial Information eXchange) is an industry-driven messaging standard that is changing the global financial services sector. FIX is the de-facto standard for pre-trade, trade and post-trade transaction processing. Buy-side and sell-side firms, exchanges and service providers use the protocol to transact in an electronic, transparent, cost-efficient and timely manner.
FIX Protocol Ltd works with market regulators and other industry bodies to expand the standard across investment, product and asset class. The protocol is actively used for pre-trade, trade, and post-trade communication for equities, derivatives, fixed income, and foreign exchange.
Attendance is free of charge to financial service participants in the SADC region. FPL reserves all rights of attendance and registration, with participation limited to 325 attendees. About the Southern Africa FIX Committee
The primary objective of FPL’s Southern Africa Committee is the promotion and use of FIX in the domestic and SADC markets. Members of the SA Executive (SAEC) span the local securities industry, which includes buy-side firms, exchanges, network providers, vendors and sell-side firms. The use of the protocol in South Africa has evolved over the past two-years from ‘vanilla’ equities (order routing, trade confirmation and allocation) into a multi-asset standard for transaction messaging.
The protocol’s evolution includes Direct Market Access, Indication of Interest and Algorithmic Stock Trading in the Equities market and Trade Reporting for Fixed Income products that include Bonds, Debt, ROD’s, FRA’s, Swaps and Derivatives. The progression of the market has resulted in FIX becoming multi-asset class in South Africa.
At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2002, the African Union detailed its NEPAD (New Partnership for Africa’s Development) initiative. The AU noted that the initiative relied on sharing knowledge, expertise and experience within member states to ensure that the region attracts sufficient foreign direct investment (FDI) to become economically sustainable. Increasing FDI in the region is achievable through the collaboration of member states, financial market participants and regulators. The implementation and use of electronic trading technology and a global message standard like FIX will increase market transparency, liquidity and investor confidence. South Africa is an attractive destination for foreign investors, and the level of technology and market sophistication will enable it to become the ‘centre of excellence’ within the African Union. The Southern Africa FIX Committee plans to be the conduit in the sub-Saharan region to achieve the NEPAD vision.
The Southern Africa Committee reports into the EMEA FPL Governance Board and EMEA Regional Committee. Michael Eidne and Gavin Borrageiro, from Investec Asset Management and Rand Merchant Bank respectively, share the leadership of the SA Committee and represent the region on the aforementioned FPL committees.
