Is it common practice to inform clients that connection to a FIX server can be on multiple servers.

Eg.

To connect to my server you can connect to
MACHINE1 - IP1 or MACHINE2 - IP2

Therefore I expect in the case of failure on MACHINE1 clients will attempt to connect to my other MACHINE? Therefore placing the responsibilty on clients…!

Or is it the case that most sessions to a FIX Servers expect this to be solved by routers etc.
on the FIX Server side?

I think you will find some clients capable of supporting this in an automated fashion and others which cannot. In general, I think you’ll find a mix, thereore, you may want to consider both approaches.
