# How is password shared in the logon request for authentication in FIX 4.2.

How is password shared in the logon request for authentication in FIX 4.2.

FIX 4.3 and above have a dedicated Tag 554 for sending the Password. However 4.2 does not have any such tag. Can RawData\<96\> be used for the same ?

FIX 4.2 Logon(35=A) says for the use of RawData(96) and RawDataLen(95): _Required for some authentication methods_. I believe it is the only way to send password information, encrypted or not, this legacy version of FIX.

Do not forget that you still need to secure your FIX session. [FIXS](https://www.fixtrading.org/standards/fixs/) is the Technical Standard recommended by FIX for this.
