Is there a FIX message type catalog?

I’m not sure I understand your question. Within the Field Reference, the MsgType field (tag 35) is defined which provides a complete list of all valid MsgType values.

FIX 4.3 (draft #1 is presently available) document has been restructured and organized into multiple volumes. It should give you a clear understanding of which MsgTypes are Admin messages, are pre-trade (quoting, indication, etc), orders & executions (general, list, etc), and post-trade (allocations, settlment instructions, etc).
