What is the difference between Tag 100 (Ex-Destination) and Tag 207
(Security Exchange) in FIX 4.2 ?

SecurityExchange is part of the Instrument block and to be used for further identification of a security. ExDestination is for routing to specify a market place where an order is to be or was traded.

Nitya,

To further substantiate you can either use a combination of tag 22/48 & 207 to substantiate the exchange to which you want the order to be routed OR use a combination of tag 55 & 100. But remember there’s no hard and fast rule in the world of FIX and anything is possible

I agree to the choice of 22/28 vs 55 but I would not recommend to use the Instrument block (which included 207) for routing. It is only intended for security identification independent of a specific marketplace where it might be traded. You could use it to convey the primary marketplace which maybe also defines its characteristics.

Yes, anything is possible in FIX but it erodes the benefits of a standard if we all use our own flavors just because it makes our life a little easier in the short term. FIX is not always unambiguous about its concepts but wherever it is, the users should try to follow them. “Violations” should always be a conscious and well documented decision.
