# password field

Hi,

I want to have password authentication before establishing a fix connection with sell-side. How is this information usually passed in FIX 4.0 and 4.2 as I dont see any specialized password field in both these versions.

It depends upon which engine you are using. e.g. if you are using quickfix then you can embed the password field into the message in the event ‘toAdmin’, which is fired when you send the login request, in the implementation of this event, you can read password (may be from some user database etc.) and set the field 554.

In case you are not using any fix engine then you have to do on the client side before logon message is sent.

Many exchanges use the RawDataField ([http://www.onixs.biz/fixdictionary/5.0/tagNum\_96.html](http://www.onixs.biz/fixdictionary/5.0/tagNum_96.html)) to hold the password. Remember to set the RawDataLength as well if your FIX engine doesn’t do it automatically.
