I am copying a question from the FIX.4.4 changes forum as I believe it is pertinent to all versions of FIX:

We were recently informed of a grouping of Symbology tests that needed
to be completed due to NASDAQ having a new list of miscellaneous
characters that they were going to incorporate into their ticker symbols
(aka Security ID). In the list of characters that we ran, only one of
them had issues in FIX, and that was the equals sign (‘=’)Is ‘=’ a valid FIX 4.4 character?
I have received an tip that Nasdaq may be backing away from using “special” characters and that their new symbology is under review and possible change.
Nonetheless, the FIX field encoding of Tag=Value shouldn’t be affected if the value contains an embedded equals sign IMHO as you can still parse the field correctly.
