The Global Technical Committee has reviewed and preliminarily approved the TimeStamp Datatypes Enhancement proposal. The FIX Clock Synchronisation subgroup has worked to address requirements for MiFID II regulations, as well as the existing requirements of execution venue. Previously in tag=value encodings, the FIX timestamp data-types are defined (and implemented) to support millisecond granularity. This proposal enhances the tag=value with higher timestamp resolution. This enhancement will impact all supported versions using FIX tag=value encoding, including FIX.4.2, FIX.4.4, FIX.5.0SP1, and FIX.5.0SP2. The enhancement proposal also provides recommendations for differing levels of support for increased time precision. The next step will be for FIX to work with software vendors, service providers, and the open source community to implement the enhanced time precision in a consistent and uniform manner.
The document now enters a public comment period in which public review and feedback is encouraged. Once the public comment period closes, the Global Technical Governance Board will meet to review public comments before final approval.
