I may be more than a little confused about this because this is tricky. On page 10 in the FIX 4.1 spec there is a table for responses to out of sequence received messages. For an out of sequence Logout message received it says "issue a ResendRequest to retrieve all missing messages followed by a Logout messages which serves as a confirmation of the Logout request."
I was wondering why Logout messages should be processed in sequence. Presumably if everything is all-right, the Test Request preceding the Logout should take care of any gap fills. If the received Logout was due to the sender encountering a fatal error, then sending him a ResendRequest will not do much. That is, if the Logout is an indication that the sender is bailing out, what’s the point of sending him a ResendRequest message.
Would it be alright for non-Logout-initiators to respond to a Logout message by immediately sending a Logout in response and terminating? The rationale being if everything was alright this received Logout was preceded by a Test Request that took care of gaps. If everything was not alright, the received Logout was a sign of a serious error, so you might as well send a Logout yourself and jump off.
