This position is with a newly created group known as “Blue Prints”. They are headed up a Senior IT Manager - Managing Director) and a senior Operations Manager - MD).

This group was created as an effort for Operations and technology to come together to define strategy for the business’ technology needs over the next 5-7 years. The group will be made up of 20-25 people including positions like this (Sr. Business Analysts/Project Managers, Technical Architects and engineers).

This group will be responsible for meeting with business and operations to find out where they are and where they are going to be as far as their needs over the next few years. With that understanding, they will be in charge of developing strategy for technology solutions… what they will need, what they can do with their technology and how they are going to get there (defining their capability and delivery options - i.e… outsourcing, packages, custom development). After deciding what they will need to do, they will go to the business and sell them on the different option letting them know all of the options… i.e. this one will be best but will cost a lot… this one is good but no very robust and will take a year to develop… etc.

The plans they will be making for the business’ technology will most likely be for the next 5 to 7 years.

The business/operations areas they will be interacting with will include back-office transaction processing. Each group will have their specialty though (there will be 5 different major areas) including operational front end systems (branch systems that customers interact with) including new account opening, etc., order routing and trading including clearing and settlement, transaction processing, and client reporting, etc.

It is important that the people have a solid understanding of retail brokerage… not everything listed above but some expertise in an area (if2 not an overall understanding of everything). Again, they will be hiring multiple Architects so they want people at different levels with different expertise to round out the group.

The Senior Architects will be in charge of really understanding the capabilities they have currently and deciding what they will be developing these systems in. Everything from the technologies to how to integrate them. They need to be capable of setting the vision (both long term and short term) for technology solutions. They have to be able to make hard decisions and sell them to very senior people in technology, operations and the business… They have to be capable of evaluation all of the options available and making the decision of what will work best and what should be presented. They then have to see through what ever decision is made.

This person MUST have experience in retail brokerage… middle and back office including

  • Check processing
  • Security Master
  • Branch operations
  • Clearing and settlements

This is a position within the infrastucture group. This is not a position for a RUN OF THE MILL “APPLICATION ARCHTECT”

They need to be an architect in Middleware, webm Networking, Broker desktop, mainframe… VERY BROAD
They have to be a technology leader but NOT A LINE MANAGER

Must have experience building projects from scratch… not just one or two applications… major innitiatives!!

One last thing, this is a hands on position with 2 direct reports and a lot of influence over the global orgonization… this is not a role for someone who moved up the ranks of an IT orgonization who now just manages people.

Technical Architect - - We’re looking for a person with three distinct characteristics:

  1. Experience in a retail brokerage operation. They should have experience with front, middle, and back office systems. some examples of these systems are customer and reference data, new account opening, clearing, settlement, account maintenance, check processing, etc. The person needs to understand how these systems interoperate and what their technology dependencies are.

  2. broad technology experience with specific expertise in integration technologies. They should understand how infrastructure, data, and application development come together to create systems and solutions. The intersection of these technology silos defines a technical discipline of its own typically called application integration that includes messaging technology (MQ, MSMQ, Tibco, etc), entitlements, authentication, logging, workflow, rules, formatting, repository, etc.

  3. communication/collaboration. This person will be responsible for advocating and promoting the technology framework, services, and architecture. They must be respected across the technology group for their intelligence, experience, and ability to communicate the team’s vision. A strong will combined with an ability to listen is key.
