SWIFT to/from FIX transformation.

Imported from previous forum

Dear Experts,

  1. Is there any product to support a transformation of SWIFT messages to FIX ones (and vice versa)?
  2. How complicate could be such a procedure?
    Regards,
    Serguei.

When I worked at NEON we did some analysis on such a product. We did NOT think we could write a generalized product (for all security types and all countries) within a short (3-6 month) timeframe using the NEON message transformation software. I don’t know of any product that actually does this.

1 - There are many code sets in both protocols and they are different in each protocol so you need a translation mechanism.
2 - The range of fields used depends most often on the product (although sometimes on the country/market).
3 - Finally, SWIFT is primarily geared to the post-trade environment while FIX ranges from pre-trade through allocation. The greatest overlap between these two protocols occurs in the trade reporting and allocation phases.

My personal opinion is as follows:

  • I assume you already have a trade settlement engine that understands the settlement life-cycle. (What the TFM was supposed to do.)
  • If it already takes one of these protocols as input (probably SWIFT) you could extend the part that formats and sends messages (and receives and parses messages) to deal with FIX messages instead. This message handler would replace the "normal" SWIFT message handler in sending/receiving information from the settlement engine.

I have recently heard of a messaging translator/hub that is commercially available that is used for this type of purpose and "transforms" XML to FIX, and Fix to many other protocols/languages…look to the Product Discussion site for this type of information.

I hope we can discuss this further.
