Writing the file ‘by hand’ is actually not that difficult provided you have one or more rendering tools to view your work as you go. Try the CAM Editor tool - http://www.cameditor.org - there is an 8 minute tutorial video too.
You can visually restrict (exclude) parts of structure you don’t need - and provide values hints as annotations for those you do.
Then File / Export / XML Examples - and it will write a selection of test cases for you.

Rapid Addition offer a free tool to generate the XML files.
Free FIXatdl editor and FIXatdl vault
Although this may sound like a product plug it is not. We, Rapid Addition, have released a free vault for controlling the distribution of FIXatdl files and a free editor for writing the XML files.
The reason behind free service was that we saw a lot of variability in the files we received from brokers, some being plain wrong; others interpreting FIXatdl in different ways. This would, of course, lead to users, including ourselves, having to support many interpretation and increased costs for the industry.
Only by having consistent interpretation of the specification will be industry achieve maximum benefit from this innovation, and we hope that a free FIXatdl editor helps achieve this.

Need to remember there is not much “precision” in FIXatdl in terms of layout, look of widgets, etc. Goal was to enable OMS systems to start from FIXatdl and extend /override as they saw fit to enable them to always remain 100% in control of their very proprietary and highly refined GUI environment.
FIXatdl Widget library is limited and abstract (functional description only), Panels are not tightly defined (such as x,y,z positioning, colors etc). Some OMS systems want every similar strategy, across all the various different brokers to “look and feel” about the same on the trader’s screens - that may mean repositioning things like start & end time from the way it is expressed in various FIXatdl files into their standard positioning.
Bottom line - FIXatdl inherent GUI capability is “crude and primitive” therefore (unlike CSS, HTML, etc) FIXatdl “graphics” is very easy to learn.
Also - you may benefit the most from looking at sample xml files (few are available, however more are on the way). They are so much easier to understand than looking at the xsd files themselves. There is also an open source parser render that can draw the files on the screen. You may find by making simple changes to sample files and having them drawn on the screen you can easily learn what is available in the drawing area.
That’s not to knock the tools out there. Actually the tools out there do much more than draw. They can provide “hand holding” for doing the rules expression (very slick and used in both the validation and flow areas), and can help with all parameters and values that must go on the wire.
Again best advice is to try (or even make) tiny sample files in xml and skip an exhaustive study of the xsd’s as the entry strategy.
I totally agree with Russell Curry / Assimilate Technology we can’t have in depth product promotion or pitches going on in Algo Trading Forum – that stuff ONLY belongs in the product forum.
However, when it’s related to “how to use FIXatdl?” or “I what to do x, what’s available to help me?” I’d hope this forum could show unbiased, non promotional type info that was genuinely helpful and deadly responsive to what specifically was actually asked.
We just launched v1.1, the array of products, services and support around that is still getting settled. I didn’t even know Assimilate had a visual product in this area. If its a v1.1 compliant product would love paragraph overview and link for more specific info…yes, posted here.

Ok - we have a Drag&Drop WYSIWYG visual editor that is capable of generating FIXatdl layouts and files. We haven’t made any announcements in relation to the 1.1 standard because we’re not fully 1.1 compliant at this point and I don’t like to make noise about things until we’re really ready to go. Also, we’ve moved away from just delivering an editor and are working on some crazier ideas that we’ve had. We’ll be making some announcements on this in the near future.

Check out atdl4j (www.atdl4j.org). While it doesn’t generate the files, it can help you with the rendering and also will show you the FIX message output.
