Is there a list available on who is using FIX. Especially Stock Exchanges, Brokerage houses etc… We are trying to evaluate if Fix would be of use to us and that depends on how much it is used
There is not an official list and likely never will be as individual firms are free to download the spec and implement it. We are working on putting together a "Principals" section on the FIX website similar to the "Vendors" section. The Principals page will likely be broken into categories of investment manager, broker/dealer, and exchange/ECNs. Firms will be able to voluntarily fill out a web-based form to provide information regarding who they are, how they have implemented FIX, and what their FIX capabilities are. I believe this will go a long way towards providing a somewhat comprehensive list of who is using FIX.

Is the ‘principals’ section still being considered. I would find it useful.

I can’t tell you how many other firms are using FIX, but I can tell you that Warburg Pincus believes FIX is absolutely necessary to achieve STP. We have made a major commitment to the protocol and view it as a vital electronic communication protocol for exchanging trade information between ourselves (an Investment Management firm) and our Brokers.
Our evaluation of FIX did not heavily weight how many other firms were using the protocol. We looked at FIX in the same way a firm would might look at buying the first FAX machine or the first telephone. If nobody else has one, the machine/telephone it is useless. Yet today, business cannot be done without a FAX or telephone.
The FIX paradigm is here to stay - Regardless of how the protocol evolves and changes. The sooner we embrace the experience, the better off everyone will be.
