can a 5.x session deal with a 4.x session

I’m distilling this question down as much as possible, so don’t read this as coming from some naive idiot.

Given a (theoretical) session machine that supports FIX 5.x ONLY, can it communicate successfully with a machine that supports FIX 4.x ONLY.

In other words, could I throw away all my 4.x machines and depend on a 5.x machine to supply all my FIX messaging needs.

My management believes ‘yes’. I believe ‘no’.

If possible (if they exist) I’d appreciate document references with either answer.
