Difference between Fix Version and fix datadict

Imported from previous forum

I am totally new to the world of FIX protocols.

I am interested in knowing the behaviour of FIX protocol
when i select fix version as 4.4 and fix datadict as 4.2 then what would happen.
I tried this combination but found it working nicely.
Can any one tell me about any problems that could arise with the above combination?
Also please do tell me the relationship of Fix version and Fix datadict

“Working nicely” probably means that your FIX engine did not complain. It does not mean that it is a good idea to use FIX 4.2 fields (from the data dictionary) in FIX 4.4 messages as they could have been deprecated or replaced by something else (e.g. tag 76 ExecBroker).

The relationship between FIX version and data dictionary is that you cannot separate one from the other. Every FIX version has its data dictionary and using FIX x.y implies that you are using the associated data dictionary.

Which part of the FIX documentation made you believe otherwise? Maybe there is room for improvement to make things clearer for novices such as yourself.
