FIX/FAST is approaching its end?

The life cycle of the FIX/FAST protocol, including streamlined FIX/FAST, is rapidly approaching its end as an industry standard in the United States. The OPRA connected exchanges are eliminating FIX/FAST entirely by the end of this year. Given the increased availability of bandwidth as well as high speed connections such as co-location, compression has become less critical. In the short term, we are removing certain field operators (copy, default, delta and increment) from our data feed. In the longer term, CME Group continues to evaluate a next generation market data protocol.

Does anybody have any comments?

I am taking any sides here. We are to support our platform and will be receiving/parsing market data from CME, OPRA, Eurex, Arca and others – no matter what kind of protocol or encoding they have to use.
CME says: “The OPRA connected exchanges are eliminating FIX/FAST entirely by the END OF THIS YEAR”. It’s kind of a short notice, I would say ;). But I have not heard from any other “OPRA connected exchanges”. I am wondering if you, guys, know what was this statement about…

If FAST is comming to an end, is there a reason why? I noticed the following article on the issue.

Should I be worried about this? Does this mean that it is not reasonable to adopt FAST for any future projects? Are there alternatives for FIX streaming out there if so?

the linked article mentions ongoing litigation as a possible reason for moving away from FAST. One of the exchanges commented that network capacity has increased and that there is less need for compact representations as a consequence. The use of 1 and 10 Gigabit networks indeed lessens the need for compactness and most FAST implementations add some latency at those speeds.

As far as I know there is no obvious alternative available today.
I would be surprised if we won’t see a new initiative if FAST is “coming to an end”.
