FIX Tags 11 & 41

Hello:

I wanted to find out if there are field length limits on FIX tags 11 or 41
for FIX 4.1. I was unable to locate any information about allowable lengths
of those fields in the specifications. If there are limits, can you direct
me to where they are in the specifications?

Hi Ryan,

FIX Protocol does not specify a limit. The limit must be bilaterally agreed upon with your FIX counter-party.

If you limit values to 16 chars or less, you should be okay with most counter-parties. In any case, you’ll want to check with each counter-party to which you connect that your clOrdID (tag 11) size will fit within their defined limit.

Sellside firms and exchanges will typically have a document (often referred to as Rules of Engagement) that list supported messages and field requirements.
