Register tags - how to

Imported from previous forum

Hi,

I would like to register a range of tags for handling competing dealer info in the Fixed Income context.

To prevent any other party to use the same tags I want to register them as user defined tags. I would like to know

  1. which is the process for that ?
  2. whom to contact ?
  3. is there any constraints required for registration of a tag ?
  4. any charges ?
  5. which tags number can be used?

Many thanks in advance !

There are no more tags left in the public user-defined range from 5000-9999. You can use tags 20000-39999 but that will not prevent others from using the same tags. Or you can submit a proposal to extend the standard with tags below 5000.
I suggest to find out first whether your requirements are not already met by existing tags.

There are indeed some tags in the 5000-9999 range that are worth looking at. E.g.

tag 5487 - NoDealers (integer) ← number of dealers

My personal opinion is that the time is right to add this kind of attribute into the core standard (ie below 5000), given the explicit reference to the multi-dealer RFQ model in new regulations such as Dodd-Frank (which mandates that an RFQ needs to be sent to a specified minimum number of dealers).

I expect this topic to be discussed in the GFIC Tech Subcommittee programme of work for 2012 which hopefully will be kicked off soon.

Is is possible to re-purpose an existing user defined tag between 5000-9999 if it was registered by us in the first place?

The owner of a tag can change the tag definition or even remove the tag. It will impact others that have made use of the tag so that it would be a courtesy to post on this forum whether anybody is using it. After all the purpose of public UDFs is that others can also make use of them. Private UDFs should be defined between 20,000 and 39,999.
If the user that originally registered the tag is no longer with the firm then only FPL can re-assign the tag to a different employee of the firm. This should be informally requested by one of the contacts of the firm known to FPL (email to FPL Program Office).
Thanks,
Hanno.

Hi

currently tag numbers in the user defined range of 5000 to 9999 have all been allocated. Private UDFs should be defined between 20,000 and 39,999.
But, what about tags included in the range of 10000 to 19999?
Could be used them?

Thanks. Patrizia

Hi Patrizia,

First, you may want to look at tags: 6703, 6704 and 6705
http://fixprotocol.org/specifications/fields/6703-6705
They refer to RFQ competition.

Per your second question:

  • For MTS communication with external parties, you should use range 20000 – 39999;
  • For MTS internal communication, you may use range 10000 - 19999;

FYI:
FIX Tag Number ranges

  • 1 to 5000: Standard FIX Tag Numbers
  • 5000-9999: Custom Fields –Publicly Identified
  • 10000 - 19999: Private user defined fields; Are for internal use only, i.e. not intended for your communication with external parties!
  • 20000 - 39999: Use as user defined tags to be used bilaterally between parties
