Hi,
I wish to know that in real world systems,
how long does a FIX session last in common practice?

In my firm’s “real world systems” FIX sessions which support all of the world markets typically run 23 hours and 50-55 minutes or so. We agree upon a specific reset time with our counterparty and drop a few minutes prior to that and restart a few minutes after that (to provide a little “clock variance” room). We typically schedule such “downtime” between the end of North American markets and the beginning of market activity in Asia/Japan (e.g. around 6pm ET). Some of our counterparties require specific downtime at specifc hours (e.g. to support a batch cycle) and may be down for longer periods. Our system is flexible enough that each of our FIX sessions can have a different start/stop/seq reset time which we find really benefical. We will typically run a US-only connection from 8am-7pm ET.
FIX 4.1 introduced a feature called ResetSeqNumFlag in the Logon to allow sequence numbers to be reset without actually dropping and restarting the FIX session, however, that is not widely used (also problematic if the steps do not go according to plan).
