I’ve been looking, but so far haven’t found anywhere to get hold on an excel workbook with FIX 4.2 tags and fieldnames in (don’t need field values at this stage)
Anyone know if this exists ?

Go to https://www.fixtrading.org/standards/.
Choose “Search FIXimate” at the lower bit of the page. A new tab will open with the latest FIXimate.
Click on “FIXimate for legacy versions”. FIXimate will allow you to select an older version.
Select FIX Version 4.2 and click on “Fields”, then “Sorted by tag number”.
Click into the main window and do CTRL-C, go to Excel and do CTRL-V.
Reduce content further as needed (e.g. some fields have extra rows).
Feel free to post the result for everyone else to benefit from 
Alternatively, go to the FIX 4.2 Spec (https://www.fixtrading.org/standards/fix-4-2/) and copy the first two rows under “Field Definitions”.
The golden source is obviously the FIX Repository and its XML files. But it is harder to obtain the information from there.
