I’m a FIX certification engineer and I was wondering where you guys see the FIX job market going in the future? I noticed that there is interest in automating the certification proccess which would sevearly devalue my job. All that would leave would be the production support roles where you have to track order flow to establish the status of a broken trade. I wonder if they will eventually even automate this as well. I mean, can’t software track orders via FIX messages and follow the rules of any given protocol?
As for the current market, I’m aware that jobs are posted on this website, but I want to look at the big picture. What are all of the main ways that you find jobs requiring FIX protocol expertise?
Is having FIX skills in today’s market going to be a progressivly benifitial skill set moving forward? Is this one of the “hot” job trends right now in a bitter cold job market?
Just to give you and idea and reference here is a skill summery:
Ability to read raw FIX messages in real-time
Install and configure middleware
CameronFIX, Appia
Unix Scripting
Basic SQL
Windows server hardware and software
Do I have an attractive skill-set for today’s market? Thank you!

IMHO
Future is good for any new technology which improves communication among business entities and FIX is the one which has brought sea-change in financial community in last 6-7 years in whole world.
Things important in FIX:
- Connectivity: Knowing session level messages and configuration of an engine (Appia, Cameron, TT, Aegis etc.). Have general idea about connectivities (VPN, internet, etc.)
- Tech/Business Support: Knowing business where the FIX is mplemented (like Equity, FixedIncome, Clearing, Options work flow etc.). Such people can fix-enable systems and provide technical/business support, like checking logs, tracing orders and state of business messages.
- Develop applications like FIX-engines or modules to handle FIX messages in a system. Such people know couple of programming languages and undestand FIX and business.
- Business Analysts: Know FIX and how it applies to the business (like Equity trading, FixedIncome, Options, etc.).
