Length for Tag 55

Is there any limitation for the length for Tag 55? Can we have ISIN in Tag 55 to identify the security?

I do not see any limitation to length of tag 55. FIX expects tag 55 to contain Ticker symbol. Correct way to send ISIN is by using Tag 22 = 4 and Tag 48 = ISIN number.

There is no limit on the length & type of info in Tag 55. The standard set as per Fix is that tag 55 must contain Ticker Symbol alongwith Tag 100 corresponding to the Exchange code to which the ticker belongs. But its upto the concerned parties to drcide as to what to have in Tag 55. If a client can’t send Tag 55=Ticker symbol & has only ISIN’s as its only information source. It can send ISIN number in Tag 55. Its upto the Broker to decide whether he will be accepting that info in Tag 55. Fix is not a rigid platform where you need to strictly abide by its sayings. Its upto the concerned parties which can agree & customise their systems to accept what they have agreed.

A clarification: Tag 100 (ExDestination) is not “the exchange to which the ticker belongs”, rather ExDestination represents the market where an order is being directed for trading. ExDestination is not part of the symbology set of fields, rather SecurityExchange (207), a field added in FIX 4.1, refers to the primary exchange of the security.
