What technology is used for data transfer in financial institutions? is it FIXML or XML?

the technology used for data transfer (message format)is either FIX using native protocol tag-value pairs or FIXML which is the XML-version of the FIX protocol only which defines the tag-values pairs using xml elements for the messages.

the transport wrapper used may be soap ( for xml-schema) based, may be middlewares like MQ Series, Tibco etc.).
If there is any doubt or discrepancy in my clarification please let me know…
