Ability to move a discussion thread from one forum to another

Imported from previous forum

The old website provided the capability to move or delete posts. Is this functionality supported by the new website?

I had user the ability to move posts to correct erroneous postings. This applies especially to the use of "General Q/A" which people tend to use if they do not want to look for the right place. It makes it much harder for others to find the right content if related discussions are spread across many forums, e.g. General Q/A, FIX 5.0 SP2 Feedback, FIX 5.0 SP1 Feedback,..., FIX Semantics, FIX Technology. Most posts are neither general nor version specific.

If the functionality is provided by the new website in general, can my entitlements be set in a way that it allows me to move posts? I do not need the ability to delete posts which is used to get rid of e.g. product advertisements.

At the moment this is only done by a database script (so can be done on request).

We have a feature request logged to package a tool to make this an action that can be performed automatically by site Admins, and once thats available we could grant that capability to you for that purpose (subject to FPL PO input), either by making your main a/c a site admin, or by providing a "special purpose" login explicitly to support this (which might avoid any blurring of the lines between more general access as a user and as a site admin?).

It would also be possible to develop a tool that would allow non-site-admin users the generalised cabability to move a Discussion Topic in its entirety between Discussion Categories (and potentially other group-types for that matter, so that for example, a topic could be moved from a Discussion Category into a Committee, Working Group, etc), subject to the constraint that the user must be an Owner/Adminsitrator of BOTH the groups in question. This would negate the need to be a site admin to perform this action, and would be more generally useful, but is likely to be a more substantial undertaking than the approach above, so would need the input of the PO from a resource & priority perspective. This would certainly be a fundamentally preferable approach from a design perspective, as it negates the need to assign site-admin status for a narrowly defined specialist purpose, or have the capability performed on your behalf by a site-admin.

You are slightly unusual in that you effectively have a site admin/moderator role in respect of GTC content, but otherwise are a user and Member Admin.

I do not see a need to move entries between discussion categories and committees and/or working groups, especially since any registered user can post something but you have to be a member to engage in a committee or WG. It is an interesting question what to do with posts from non-members into pages of committees and WGs.

What is the current entitlement setting for the addition of a topic to a committee or WG? It looks like you need to be a member of that committee or WG to even see the discussions tab.

If the FPL PO agrees to let me continue to move posts then I would also not mind a special GTC account in order to track such activities and keep them separate from my activities as regular user. It is a little less convenient to have to change login but doable.

It depends on the configuration of that group, but for Committees, Sub-Committees, and Working groups they are set to:-

"Closed" (membership by invitation/approval of request)

"View and Comment Only" (only owners/admins/content moderators and designated "contributors" can post artifacts other than Discussion topics)

"Public"- the existence of the Committee is visible to people other than its members.

For closed groups you need to be a member to see the Discussion Tab.

Noted on the approach to moving posts, and I suggest we make sure this is provided as soon as the capability is provided. In the meantime, if you need a post relocated, just let us know and we can do it with a script.

Ken can you clarify, when you say a group is ""closed" can the members of the group even post a comment to the Discussion tab for the group or not at all?

Yes- "Closed" just relates to whether membership is open to all comers, or by invitation/request, it doesnt affect permissions within the group.

If "Closed" and Only Visible to Members, then the "request membership" option is obscured (since cannot even see the group unless a member, so solely by invitation (but this isnt how these groups are generally configured- most are "Public".

To post a Discussion within the group requires the user to be a member, and if "closed", you need to be a member to see it.

This all assumes Discussions are switched on for the that group. Group owner/admin can dictate that.

Posting permissions for Content other than Discussions within the group can be limited to designated "Contributors" or made "Any Member May Post". Members may still comment on content, even if they acannot post, providing the content permits comments at all.  For Discussions, the restriction on Contributors/Any Member makes no sense, since thats its only purpose and it would be hard to have a discussion with yourself that other members could not join in, so Discussions are always open to all group members if activated at all.
