Not sure if this is a bug or a feature but the check boxes for personal and group notifications react to one another. Setting the group notification also activates the personal notification but not vice versa. Removing a group notification also activates a personal notification if it had not been set and I need to remove it again to have no notification. This means it is not an easy task to simply disable notifications in any of the 3 categories email/site/activity.
Need to look into that one- at first glance looks like a bug, but need to review the origins in case there is any method in our madness. I'll log it and revert.
