According to the specification on FIX4.2, it is still a bit vague in terms of which of the financial products are supported.
It was mentioned that FIX was originally defined for supporting equity trading. (including equity derivatives?) And that it now supports limited cross-border and fixed income trading.
Is a product list available?

Thanks.

FIX is overwhelmingly used for equities. The next most common usage would be vanilla fixed income then exchange-traded equity derivatives then FX then funds. There is the ability to define and trade option strategies such as calendar spreads etc.

The FIX 4.3 spec clearly specifies the 5 products it supports (in Volume 7)

  1. Collective Investment Vehicles (Mutual Funds, Unit Trusts, etc.)
  2. Derivatives (Futures and Options)
  3. Equities
  4. Fixed Income
  5. Foreign Exchange

CIV and Fixed Income were new to FIX 4.3. The other products have had somem level of support in prior versions.
