how to hand allocation amendment

If cleint send us one for and 4 allocation, 1,2,3,4. Say under FIX 4.0, if client want to modify allocation message 2, can they just send Sell-side a allocation message with AllocTransType=3 on message 2?
Or do they have to cancel all 4 messsage and resent again?

In FIX 4.4 either way will do. Personally I like to cancel and then resend all four messages as sometimes the number of allocations can change. i.e. following a price change
