How do exchange codes become part of the FIX protocol?

We’ve tried to use a “standard” as the basis for these. They are based upon the Reuters 1 to 2 character exchange identifiers. In order to support exchanges/markets which do not have a Reuters exchange code, we have a list of those in which a sequential number is assigned for each. We have the ability to maintain this list even after the release of a particular version of the FIX Protocol via the “Tech Resources” section and the “Exchange Codes” sub-section on the FIX website. If you feel that you need something added to this, please contact Peter White or myself. Thanks.

Thanks Scott:

I tried wandering threw the Reuters web site looking for exchange codes, and found a three character listing for my organization (New York Mercantile Exchange / NYMEX) which was NYM, but could not find any 1 or 2 character codes.

Would anyone know where I could look to see if Reuters also has a 1 or 2 character code for us?

Joseph,

To my knowledge Reuters use a three character exchange mnemonic e.g. ‘NYM’ for NYMEX. The one or two character codes are exchange IDs which are appended to a Reuters instrument code to identify the exchange e.g. ‘.N’ for NYSE who’s nmemonic is ‘NYS’. NYMEX doesn’t seem to have an exchange ID code in Reuters. All exchanges have mnemonics but they don’t all have IDs.

Since NYMEX has not been assigned a 1 or 2 char Reuters exchange ID, and because NYMEX is moving into using FIX (FIXML), how does one go about getting an ID assigned to us?

I’ve assigned the “custom” exchange code of “12” for “NYMEX”. This can be viewed under “Tech Resources”, “Exchange Codes”.
